Hydroseeding

Best Hydroseeding in St. Louis

Hydroseeding is an efficient and cost-effective way to establish grass across large or hard-to-reach areas. Midwest Turf provides professional hydroseeding in St. Louis for projects where traditional seeding methods may be slower, less efficient, or harder to apply evenly.

Hydroseeding

Hydroseeding is used primarily on commercial projects & large job sites to help cut labor costs while seeding large areas.  Hydroseeding is our preferred method of seeding on steep slopes as well as along roadways.   The ground is prepared in the same manner as traditional seeding prior to seed application, but the Hydroseeding truck allows the seed/fertilizer & hydromulch to be applied hydraulically.  The Hydroseeding Truck uses a powerful pump to create enough pressure to cast water combined with seeding material hundreds of feet away from the truck increasing both efficiency along with cost savings.

The Hydroseeding Process Includes:
  • Removing existing grass and weeds if necessary.
  • Finish grading to create a smooth surface and positive drainage.
  • Topsoil or compost may be added if desired.
  • Soil preparation including pulverizing, raking, rock pick up etc., to create a good seedbed.
  • Seed and fertilizer is hydraulically applied through a hydroseeder in one step.
  • Once the area has been seeded, straw is applied.
  • Hydro mulch tackifier (glue) is then applied over the straw with a hydroseeder to help stabilize the straw.
  • There are also many different hydro mulch products that can be chosen in lieu of straw.

Overview of Hydroseeding

Hydroseeding is one of the most efficient ways to establish grass across large areas, especially on commercial sites, roadways, and difficult terrain. Midwest Turf provides professional hydroseeding in St. Louis for projects where traditional seeding methods may be slower, less efficient, or harder to apply evenly. This technique allows grass seed, fertilizer, and protective materials to be applied in a single step, making it an excellent solution for large properties and areas that require quick coverage. Hydroseeding is particularly useful on slopes and uneven terrain where soil erosion can become a concern. Areas along roadways, construction sites, and newly graded land often benefit from hydroseeding because it allows grass to be applied quickly while helping stabilize the soil. The process also reduces labor costs compared to traditional seeding methods, making it a practical choice for large commercial and municipal projects. The process begins with proper site preparation, which is essential for successful grass establishment. Just like with traditional seeding, Midwest Turf prepares the soil carefully before applying any seed. Existing grass, weeds, or debris may be removed so that the new seed has a clean surface for germination. The ground is then finish graded to create a smooth surface and ensure positive drainage throughout the landscape. After grading, the soil is prepared to create a healthy seedbed. This preparation may involve pulverizing compacted soil, raking the surface, and removing rocks or other materials that could interfere with seed growth. When needed, topsoil or compost can be added to improve soil quality and provide the nutrients required for strong root development. These preparation steps are critical because they create the ideal environment for the seed to grow successfully. Once the site preparation is complete, the hydroseeding process begins. A specialized hydroseeder machine mixes grass seed, fertilizer, water, and mulch into a slurry that can be sprayed evenly across the prepared area. This mixture ensures that the seed is distributed consistently and remains in close contact with the soil, which helps promote faster germination and more uniform lawn growth. After the seed has been applied, straw mulch is often placed across the area to protect the seed and retain moisture during the early stages of growth. The straw helps reduce erosion and keeps the seed in place while it begins to germinate. To further stabilize the area, a hydro mulch tackifier can be applied using a hydroseeder. This tackifier acts like a natural adhesive that helps hold the straw in place, preventing it from blowing away or washing off during rainfall. In some cases, specialized hydro mulch products may be used instead of straw depending on the needs of the project. These materials provide additional protection for the seed while helping maintain moisture levels that support healthy germination. The combination of seed, mulch, and stabilization materials allows hydroseeding to produce consistent and reliable results across large landscapes. Hydroseeding is widely used across St. Louis County and St. Charles County for commercial developments, roadside landscaping, construction projects, and large residential properties. Because the seed mixture is applied hydraulically, the process allows crews to cover large areas quickly while maintaining precise application. This efficiency makes hydroseeding an ideal solution for projects where speed, cost-effectiveness, and consistent coverage are important. With professional hydroseeding services from Midwest Turf, property owners and contractors can establish strong, healthy turf across challenging landscapes. When installed correctly, hydroseeded areas develop durable grass coverage that helps stabilize soil and create attractive green spaces throughout the property.
