Tall fescues
are more drought resistant than many other lawn grasses such as bluegrass. Fescue roots penetrate deeper into the soil. Tall fescue is a tiller type grass, as opposed to the rhizomatous growth of bluegrass. The grass will enter dormancy in hot, dry weather as well as during the cold winter months. When cooler weather returns, it quickly regains its color and density at a faster rate than bluegrass. Like bluegrass, Fescues are a cool season grass, remaining green for 8 - 9 months out of the year.
Tall fescues are more disease resistant and wear tolerant, making them ideal for heavy foot traffic areas. Turf type tall fescue is a good choice for high-traffic lawns and shady areas. Turf type tall fescue will grow in either partial shade or sun. It grows relatively well beneath trees that shed their leaves in winter. Tall fescues appearance is best when they remain dense to keep blades thin. Proper mowing and fertilizing practices help maintain this density.

While some of the older varieties are still available, these should be avoided. These are the coarse textured Kentucky 31 type. There are now greatly improved turf type tall fescue cultivars that have a finer texture and the rich green color similar to bluegrass. In addition, improved disease and insect resistance have been selected in these cultivars. For transitional areas of the country, particularly the St. Louis region, these blends are well suited. As the plants establish themselves, the variety in the blend best suited for particular areas (shady / sunny) of the lawn will become predominate. We offer Keeven Brothers Winning Color Turf Type Fescue Sod. ProScape® Winning Colors™ is the ultimate Turf Type Tall Fescue Blend containing four of the best turf type tall fescues on the market: Picasso, Rembrandt, Monet, and VanGogh. It exhibits excellent Brown patch resistance, mowability, drought resistance, heat tolerance, and dark green genetic color.
